What should I compare when
shopping mattresses?
Top 5 things to look for when comparing memory foam mattresses
Comparing memory foam mattresses can be tough and confusing. But there is one mattress specification that matters most, and a few other things that provide value and bring peace of mind to your mattress purchase.
Memory Foam Density
Foam density is the one mattress specification that says a whole lot about the quality, performance, and durability you can expect from a mattress. Not all memory foam is the same. In fact, there is a very wide range of memory foam grades and they vary drastically in quality, durability, and price. Like knowing what size the engine is in the car you buy, it’s critical to know what the is of the mattress you buy so you know what to expect in terms of performance and longevity.
Made in the USA? Or no?
Not only is this important if you want to support our domestic economy, but when you buy a mattress online, it’s compressed, rolled, and boxed for shipping. This doesn’t hurt the mattress, but if left in a compressed state for a long period of time, various defects up to significant irreversible degradation of the memory foam may occur.
When a mattress company does not assemble you’re mattress her in the United States, it may have been shipped over from China where it was compressed several weeks or even months ago, then sent to the USA and held in a warehouse for a period of time before you buy it. Made in the USA ensures proper handling times and optimal foam quality.
Number of Mattress Layers
While more layers doesn’t always equal a better mattress, when the foams in each mattress being compared are of the same grade density, a mattress with more layers will generally offer better support and a longer life. A flippable mattress (or dual-sided mattress) with a memory foam layer on either side of the mattress adds a unique comfort aspect overall with the flexibility to change up firmness whenever you like, a benefit to consider that provides a lot of value.
Trial Period and Returns
Be sure that any mattress brand you consider has a clearly stated trial period that provides enough time for your body to adjust to sleeping on a new mattress. Depending on the person, it can take the human body up to 3 weeks to adjust to a new mattress, especially after sleeping on an old or worn mattress for a prolonged period of time. This is called the break in period, and be sure the trial period covers at least 3 weeks to do a proper sleep assessment.
Most reputable mattress brands offer free returns by way of donation of your gently used mattress to a local charity which typically takes a couple of weeks for a charity to come out and pick up. It’s well worth it to be able to try a mattress in your own bedroom to see if you like it, but be sure to review the full return policy to confirm there are no fees or deductions for returns and you get a full purchase refund.
Warranty Period
The length of the warranty period can speak to how confident a mattress brand is in their mattress build. Mattress industry standards for usable mattress life is about 8 years, and that’s the minimum warranty period you should accept when buying a mattress. Anything less could mean that the mattress is made from materials with a short life expectancy, or the company is unwilling to back it long term. Be sure to read through the full terms so you understand what’s covered and what’s not covered under the mattress warranty as these will vary from brand to brand.
